Standard #3 - Implementation

The registered psychiatric nurse performs those specific nursing actions necessary to implement the psychiatric nursing care plan.

Rationale:
As a member of the health team directly involved with providing care the registered psychiatric nurse must carry out those interventions as planned to assist the individual in achieving optimal health.

Audit Factors:

  1. Initiates the psychiatric nursing care plan.
  2. Provides consistent support, encouragement and reassurance to the individual.
  3. Assists the individual to identify, test out, and evaluate constructive patterns of living.
  4. Reinforces positive behavioral patterns in the individual's interaction with others.
  5. Employs principles of problem solving and crisis intervention.
  6. Sets limits on behavior with the ultimate goal of assisting the individual to develop internal controls and constructive ways of dealing with feelings.
  7. Carries out nursing actions demonstrating required knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
  8. Uses judgement in carrying out the nursing actions necessary to implement prescribed medical treatment.
  9. Delegates appropriate activities to auxiliary personnel and supervises these activities.
  10. Records and communicates information about nursing actions to others who have a need to know.
