Standard #8 - Professional

The registered psychiatric nurse assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth and development.

Rationale:
To function effectively and to maintain professional competence a registered psychiatric nurse must engage in an ongoing process of learning, with a responsibility for the development and refinement of knowledge in the psychiatric nursing field.

Audit Factors:

  1. Participates in professional educational activities.
  2. Participates in activities contributing to the development of psychiatric nursing.
  3. Shares innovations pertinent to practice in order to improve nursing actions.
  4. Seeks consultation to incorporate nursing innovations into practice.
  5. Modifies role in relation to change within the health care system.
