Psychiatric Nursing Re-entry Program Students
As you complete your academic studies you should become familiar with some of the legal obligations you will be required to meet as a psychiatric nurse. Through the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act and bylaws, the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Saskatchewan is empowered to set the requirements for membership and licensure of psychiatric nurses. These requirements are met in a number of ways, registration examinations, initial registration requirements, temporary and active practising licence.
In order to prepare for the financial implications of these processes, the RPNAS has prepared the following list of requirements.
Please note the next scheduled sitting for the RPNAS Registration Examination is January 15 & 16, 2004. Please contact Central Office to discuss alternate dates to write.

- GRADUATE PSYCHIATRIC NURSE MEMBERSHIP AND TEMPORARY LICENCE
In the province of Saskatchewan use of the title Anurse@ is protected by legislation. The Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act protects the title Apsychiatric nurse@, ARegistered Psychiatric Nurse@, the abbreviation APN@ or ARPN@ or any word, title or designation, abbreviated or otherwise, to imply that the person is a practising member of the RPNAS.
No person other than a graduate psychiatric nurse shall use the title AGraduate Psychiatric Nurse@, the abbreviation AGPN@ or any word, title or designation, abbreviated or otherwise, to imply that the person is a graduate psychiatric nurse.
Our legislation allows for a graduate psychiatric nurse category and the granting of temporary licence for those psychiatric nurses who have written or are waiting to write the registration examination for psychiatric nurses; or psychiatric nurses completing a re-entry program.
If you plan to work immediately after graduation as a graduate psychiatric nurse in Saskatchewan, you will be required to obtain a temporary licence. This licence is limited to a four month period, with the option for a second four month period , if required.
